“Who am I…. I’m kick-ass”
Kick-ass is most definitely not your average superhero movie, there is no mutant spider to lend u it’s powers, no alien from a distant planet that gains strength from our sun and no gamma-high green steroid filled monster. But what it does have is goodies in tights and baddies that kills. Where do I start? A friend of mine used the term “wanabe superheroes” and its right coz it actually kind of explains the movie. The movie centers on your average everyday comic book geek, Dave Lizewski. But Dave did what all of us could only dream of doing (don’t lie, we know u dream of it too), be a superhero, Kick-Ass. However, Dave is not the only masked crime fighter in town. We are later introduced to a pair of experience superheroes in the father daughter pair of Damon and Mindy Macready or better known as Big Daddy and Hit Girl. Another is Red Mist or Christopher D’Amico who has his own agenda and it is most definitely not parallel with that of Kick-Ass, Big Daddy and Hit Girl. The main bad guy is Frank D’Amico, a ruthless gangster with a finger in every bad deed in town.
Two big thumb ups for Matthew Vaughn for going through with this movie. Seeing as how initial no big production wants to buy the script and produce it, Vaughn went ahead on making this movie. I read in an article that what got Vaughn to do this movie was when Hit Girl said the “C” word in the 3rd issue, and the same reason was why no big wig company wants to produce it. As we all know, it is an adaptation of a comic book of the same title. Vaughn did a great job bringing life to the already lively ink character. The cast was great as well. They all belong in there element. Aaron Johnson as the geeky Dave was perfect, considering that Aaron looks kind of cool in real life, a total opposite of his character. Christopher Mintz-Plasse played the role of Chris D’Amico really well, being the spoiled rich kid and later as the undercover superhero Red Mist. Now, Nick Cage, I love this guy. He can pretty much act as anything he wants. Truly a great actor and same are said for his role as Big Daddy. His adopted speech mannerism for Big Daddy was homage to the original Batman played by Adam West, this shows how dedicated he was. I know this is farfetched, but what if we have him play as Joker replacing the late Heath Ledger. Next is the rising talent, Mark Strong. I have seen him in Rock’N’Rolla and Sherlock Holmes and now in Kick-Ass as the main antagonist, Frank D’Amico. This Brit can play Frank like he was born right in the U.S of A. I saved the best for last, Chloe Moretz as Mindy Macready and Hit Girl. She instantly caught my attention the minute she uttered her first “F” word in the movie and it was to her own dad no less. Chloe really brought the role really well. Now imagine an 11 year old girl with the mouth of a drunken construction worker, I mean she swears if not more, the same amount as any big boy in this movie. Not any young actress could pulls this off and she did it perfectly. It’ll be hell for her parents if she brought her role home.
In a nut-shell, Kick-Ass, colorful cast, vivid characters, great director, and a great story is the perfect blend for an awesome movie. If u haven’t seen it, go watch it. If you have seen it, then watch it again. I have seen it 3 times and will continue watching it until a sequel comes out. One that I am expecting to be more spectacular than the first.
Eagerly waiting for Kick-Ass 2,
A.D
